Is this a bannable offense?
I notice this going on a LOT...
There is a pause from the action, maybe one player went AFK for a minute and the rest of the team decides to wait. Player X decides to be a showoff, and drops a gold weapon just so everyone can see the mods, the type of weapon, and the fact that it's a gold! This continues a few times. Player Y gets aggravated (Hell, I hate it when people do this) and being quick with the mouse, picks up one of player X's golds before he gets a chance to pick it up.
I did this once, but felt kind of bad, and gave the gold back..told him not to do it again, though....however, is this, if player Y decides to keep the gold, something that he could get banned for? I've seen players threaten other players by sending screenshots to Anet, hoping that the other player would get banned.
Also (and no, I haven't done this, I'd feel too guilty)...sometimes in the Deep (or wherever) a gold drop that was originally assigned to player Z will lose its' assignment, because the player was dead, or trapped in a room, etc. If someone else picks it up, although it's certainly a jerkish thing to do, is it bannable for 'stealing' that person's gold? I've seen people threatening to take screenshots and send them to Anet for a ban, but since the person didn't cheat or anything to get the gold, I can't imagine that being bannable. That being said however, I don't think that the assignment should be lost so quickly...there are certain circumstances that make it impossible for a player to get to a gold within a certain period of time, and not every player out there is nice.

I don't think either of those are bannable offenses.
If a person keeps dropping stuff to show off and loses it, it's their own fault for being such a jackass.

If there's a chat log around the same time with the player saying he was only showing it and wasn't dropping it for others to grab, Arenanet might do something. If not, they're probably out of luck.

From a moral point of view, most would agree it's wrong.
From a technical point of view, dropping an item gives any person in the instance the opportunity to pick it up and most people are aware of that.
In my opinion if I smoked 40 cigarettes a day and developed illnesses as a result, I would not blame the tobacco comapnies. I am made aware of the effects of smoking and I make the choice to do so therefore I cannot sue the tobacconist. In the same way, you know the possible outcomes whehn you drop an item.
The moral of the story is you shouldn't ever drop something items if you want them.
...and it's your own responsibility.

Yep, it's not nice, but I don't think those are bannable offenses. Maybe they'll learn to use the trade window next time to show off, lol.

It can't be bannable. Playing around with your items is at your own risk. Loot assignment got a timer so once it runs out, then it's up for grabs. Some people are nice and some aren't....
I usually drop some wood on the floor in the deep, 1 at a time....

Equip an item and Ctrl click it if you want to show it off. Better yet open the trade window. Other than that, it is fair game IMO if you drop it and someone swipes it. Not real smart if you ask me. I probably wouldn't swipe it but if someone did I wouldn't blame them too much, especially if the other person was just showing off.
As for the gold expiring, that is wrong but probably not something A/net would do anything about.

agree with everyone else........not bannable
as for someone dropping their stuff and showing off, that's probably more immature or faux pas-ish than stealing it
and for the expiring drops, well it used to be just 5 minutes, then a while ago anet made it 10 min. Just pick your damn stuff up if you want it.

Lol, It's funny when a gold drops and it's assigned to a dead player, cause everyone in the group kind of stops for a second, just hoping that maybe he will get the gold if waits or pretends to be afk next to the gold. I usually like to rez the person it's assigned to and piss everyone else off... Although I could see that being hard to do if say everyone were dead, and a gold elemental sword dropped...

Correct.
Morally I would never steal from another player ( wouldn't want that weight on my chest) but if I was desperate.....
No, no its wrong to steal, but its also wrong to act like an idiot and do something so foolish on purpose.

Yeah Anet would ban the guy for being an idiot and dropping a weapon in an instance.
Not bannable offences in my book.
I've seen my party zone when a guy was being smart and dropping runes he had picked up, he didn't do that again!

makes me wish if i were in a pug with a tool who wants to drop his gear, that I were my sin with recall equipped
would be even better if his gear was customized and i dropped the materials I just salvaged from it (keeping any mods though)
now that's evilness befitting of a sin

i was put in that situation. a lockpick dropped for someone and we told him. but he was in a rush to want to beat the mission. When we came around to the lockpick at the end of finishing a bonus. I decided to just pick it up.

Morally wrong yes, bannable no.
I run the deep regularly with friends and occasionally we pick up one or two other pugs. We have a zero tolerance policy on others taking someone else's golds if they time out tho. We will literally all leave and regroup if someone is going to drop steal. They will be given the opportunity tho to give back the gold multiple times before we leave.
Not worth the hassle and we choose to only play with honest people.

Ethically wrong...Bannable...no.
If you drop an item on the ground it's fair game...if someone picks the item up then they're being an ass...if you're dropping it repeatedly then you deserve to lose it...and whoever picks it up deserves to keep it. It's your own damn fault for provoking the person to pick it up.
As for picking up stuff where the assignment timer has expired? yeah it's a no no if the person hasn't had a chance to pick it up...if they have had plenty of time to pick it up and ample chances to do so...it's fair game...that's as good as saying it's up for grabs.

It is so easy nowadays for somebody photoshop screen shots. It is also reason why screen shots usually not get people banned because they are not enough proof. X guy don't like that guy Y is officer in guild (X is member), Then desires to take screenshot and fake it to be bannable thing, obviously trying to get guy Y banned. This is why Anet not take final action based to screenshots and bit text.
